Read Across America

Imagine walking into a classroom of toddlers and pre-schoolers who are sitting in a circle and staring at you wide-eyed in anticipation. And then you read a book or two that you read to your children or perhaps were even read to you as a child. What an amazing and fulfilling experience when you see their excitement at hearing the stories!!

Every March since 1997 during the week of the iconic children’s author Dr. Seuss’ birthday, the National Education Association has sponsored a celebration called “READ ACROSS AMERICA.” The program is designed to encourage and promote the fun and value of reading to children of all ages..

Since 2017 (with a three year hiatus due to Covid) the SCWBA joined other WABSNY chapters in celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday by sponsoring a “READ ACROSS AMERICA” program.

Once again, on March 5, 2024, the SCWBA was delighted to participate and hold our “reading party” at the Central Brookhaven Head Start Center in Medford. The SCWBA and individual members donated approximately 100 books to the Center for their library and our committee of volunteers read to the pre-scbool children who were thrilled with the stories.

The SCWBA thanks all who participated and those who couldn’t personally attend but donated books. We look forward to many more READ ACROSS AMERICA experiences.
